Besides Thailand, other Asian countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia also export it. The question arises, however, will the name <em data-start=\"550\" data-end=\"566\">\u201cjasmine rice\u201d<\/em> soon be reserved exclusively for Thai products?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"618\" data-end=\"779\">On <strong data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"639\">26 August 2025<\/strong>, the EU Official Journal published: <strong data-start=\"678\" data-end=\"777\">\u201cINFORMATION NOTICE \u2013 PUBLIC CONSULTATION. Geographical indications of products from Thailand.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"781\" data-end=\"998\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">As part of negotiations on the EU-Thailand Free Trade Agreement, Thai authorities submitted a list of\u00a0<strong>94 geographical indications<\/strong>\u00a0to be protected in the EU, including several variants of\u00a0<em>\u201cKhao Hom Mali\u201d<\/em> rice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1000\" data-end=\"1157\">The European Commission has invited Member States and all interested parties to lodge objections \u2013 within two months of publication \u2013 if they believe that:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1159\" data-end=\"1335\">\n<li data-start=\"1159\" data-end=\"1191\">\n<p data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1191\">the name has become generic,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1192\" data-end=\"1223\">\n<p data-start=\"1194\" data-end=\"1223\">it could mislead consumers,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1275\">\n<p data-start=\"1226\" data-end=\"1275\">it is homonymous or conflicts with a trademark,<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1276\" data-end=\"1335\">\n<p data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1335\">it threatens existing use of the name on the EU market.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1754\">\n<h3 data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1754\"><strong data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1378\">Why is \u201cHom Mali\u201d rice controversial?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1337\" data-end=\"1754\"><br data-start=\"1378\" data-end=\"1381\" \/>In the EU, <em data-start=\"1392\" data-end=\"1408\">\u201cjasmine rice\u201d<\/em> is regarded as the name of a rice variety, not a geographical indication. Moreover, importers from Vietnam or Cambodia fear losing the right to use a widely recognised name. The designation <em data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1621\">\u201cThai Hom Mali Rice\u201d<\/em> is already protected in the EU. However, Thailand now seeks to extend protection, raising questions of a potential legal monopoly.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1756\" data-end=\"2011\"><strong data-start=\"1756\" data-end=\"1786\">IMPLICATIONS FOR COMPANIES<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1756\" data-end=\"2011\">Granting Thailand the exclusive right to use the name <em data-start=\"1843\" data-end=\"1855\">\u201cHom Mali\u201d<\/em> could radically reshape the EU rice market \u2013 restricting trade freedom, affecting labelling, and potentially leading to legal disputes between importers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2013\" data-end=\"2348\">The consultation process is precisely meant to allow objections from all stakeholders \u2013 not only governments or industry organisations, but also individual companies.
