This document defines the permitted \u201ccommon names\u201d for ingredients listed on food labels.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"452\" data-end=\"771\"><em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong data-start=\"452\" data-end=\"466\">IMPORTANT:<\/strong><\/span> All content, concepts and materials published by IGI FOOD LAW constitute the intellectual property of IGI FOOD LAW and are protected under copyright law. While inspiration is welcome, we kindly ask for ethical use of our materials and respect for IGI FOOD LAW\u2019s intellectual property rights and know-how.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"tlgsvp\" data-start=\"773\" data-end=\"805\">What do the changes involve?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"960\">The amendments focus on how milk ingredients and their derivatives are declared in the ingredient list. The key elements of the new approach include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"1708\">\n<li data-section-id=\"mgersp\" data-start=\"962\" data-end=\"1172\"><strong data-start=\"964\" data-end=\"1004\">Revision of the scope of class names<\/strong> \u2013 clarification of which ingredients may be declared as \u201cmilk ingredients\u201d and \u201cmilk-derived ingredients,\u201d with a more precisely defined list of eligible components.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"u65r6n\" data-start=\"1173\" data-end=\"1348\"><strong data-start=\"1175\" data-end=\"1197\">Terminology change<\/strong> \u2013 the previous term \u201cmodified milk ingredients\u201d has been replaced with \u201cmilk-derived ingredients,\u201d better reflecting the nature of these substances.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"1qqo42a\" data-start=\"1349\" data-end=\"1484\"><strong data-start=\"1351\" data-end=\"1381\">Linguistic updates (FR\/EN)<\/strong> \u2013 changes also affect French terminology, which is relevant for Canada\u2019s bilingual labelling system.<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"110yhh6\" data-start=\"1485\" data-end=\"1708\"><strong data-start=\"1487\" data-end=\"1525\">Clarification for protein isolates<\/strong> \u2013 it is explicitly stated that protein isolates derived from milk cannot be declared under general class names and must instead be labelled by indicating the source of the protein.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1710\" data-end=\"2000\">The changes result from a public consultation (August\u2013October 2025) involving manufacturers, industry associations, consumers and public authorities. CFIA reports overall support for the amendments&#8217; direction, alongside concerns from some stakeholders about consumer transparency.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"15hv004\" data-start=\"2002\" data-end=\"2033\">Scope of products concerned<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2312\">The new rules apply to products containing specific milk ingredients listed in the document&#8217;s reference tables (notably items corresponding to 7, 7.1, and 7.2). In practice, this covers a broad range of products that use processed, concentrated, or functional milk ingredients.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"v711b3\" data-start=\"2314\" data-end=\"2358\">Transition period \u2013 until 1 January 2030<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2360\" data-end=\"2414\">CFIA has provided a relatively long transition period until 1 January 2030; businesses may comply with either the previous or the new naming rules after this date; the new requirements will become mandatory for all regulated parties.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"13kx4om\" data-start=\"2612\" data-end=\"2656\">Implications for food business operators<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2658\" data-end=\"2734\">These changes go beyond purely editorial updates. In practice, they require:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2736\" data-end=\"3180\">\n<li data-section-id=\"1uuryau\" data-start=\"2736\" data-end=\"2869\">a review of labelling strategies for the Canadian market, particularly regarding the use of class names for milk ingredients,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"mfywgy\" data-start=\"2870\" data-end=\"2996\">verification of ingredient classification (e.g. milk proteins and their derivatives) against the updated naming rules,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"11skdci\" data-start=\"2997\" data-end=\"3082\">adaptation of product documentation and artwork within the transition period,<\/li>\n<li data-section-id=\"ly6qj3\" data-start=\"3083\" data-end=\"3180\">consideration of the potential impact on marketing communication and consumer perception.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3182\" data-end=\"3523\">From a global perspective, this development reflects a broader regulatory trend away from generic class names towards greater precision and transparency in ingredient labelling.
