Under this approach, the maximum amount permitted for supplementation would be calculated by subtracting the intake from the habitual diet (at the 95th percentile of consumption) from the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) established for each vitamin and mineral.<\/p>\n<p>Only this remaining amount\u2014the residual amount\u2014would be available for use in food supplements and fortified foods. According to the Commission&#8217;s current approach, this residual amount would then be allocated between these two product categories.<\/p>\n<h3>Why is this proposal so important?<\/h3>\n<p>The planned harmonisation has the potential to reshape the European food supplements market. In practice, the proposal may result in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>lower maximum permitted levels for many vitamins and minerals in food supplements;<\/li>\n<li>the need to reformulate a significant number of products currently on the market;<\/li>\n<li>greater harmonisation of national rules across EU Member States;<\/li>\n<li>significant challenges for high-dose products; and<\/li>\n<li>an impact on product development strategies and commercial portfolios.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Public consultation will be a key stage<\/h3>\n<p>The public consultation planned for 2026 will be of fundamental importance to the food supplements and fortified foods sector.
